Hi Friends,
It has been a whirlwind ten days since I have been back from fishing, with numerous meetings, sign construction, and campaign stops in Seldovia and Salmonfest. I was pleased to be able to hop on the stage at Salmonfest after the California Honeydrops’ set to remind the crowd about the importance of their activism and voting in keeping our salmon runs healthy.
While record salmon runs hit Bristol Bay, I am very disappointed to hear that the Cook Inlet set-net businesses were shut down while a big run of reds went past. The Dunleavy Administration continues to be a disaster for this fishery, and it must never be forgotten that perhaps the most anti-commercial fishery donor in the history of Alaska, Bob Penney, is one of Dunleavy’s most significant financial backers. Commercial fishing families and businesses in our district should be very wary of Dunleavy and his enablers in the House, including our current District 6 representative.
Another issue I would like to highlight is my stance on personal choice. Since Roe v. Wade was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, there has been a significant need for state legislative candidates to be clear on where they stand on the issue of reproductive rights and a women’s human rights. I will not support any infringement on the personal right to privacy in Alaska which protects personal medical decisions such as abortion. Any Alaskan who supports repealing the right to personal privacy should very carefully consider the implications of this on all aspects of privacy – if personal medical decisions can be controlled by the government, what else is on the table?
Finally, I want to thank everyone for their contributions to date. We are in a good place to keep fighting for this district. Media around the state has started to take notice and has deemed us serious contenders for the seat; although, there is still a tough race ahead.
I will have a booth at the Kenai Peninsula State Fair in Ninilchik on August 12, 13, and 14. So please stop by and say hi if you are at the fair. As always, email or call me directly if you would like a sign, or would like to participate in an upcoming volunteer event. August 16th is the primary election and the special ranked choice election for U.S. Congress.
Talk to you soon,
Louie
